Web5 — is it a new thing or just good old SSI ?

Everybody talks about #web5 last week. I was heavily surprised.

The first time where I got a proposal idea is just good old usage of DIF open standards in #SSI space with zero innovation concepts.

Affindi SDK has offered an SSI platform for edge and custodial wallets for a few years in cross-platform manner. So we do a web5 for three years but give you the freedom of cross-platform development.

WEB5 = #DID (#ION side tree) + VC + #DWN (distributed storage protocol on top of IPFS).

It is bitcoin obsessed platform. Unfortunately, bitcoin does not have a concept of smart contracts. Ethereum was built exactly for this reason — the bitcoin community refuses to add a programmatic layer. It is one of the reasons that force to build layers off-chain to close a gap. Pure SSI is a chain agnostic concept that could have an implementation on top of on-chain solutions if needed. https://developer.tbd.website/projects/web5/
